SELECT
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Working together we have accomplished much to improve the quality of life
throughout SW Raleigh and our great city. Since being elected District D’s
representative, with your help, I have:
Authored
Raleigh’s first mission statement adopted by the current council.
Required growth
to pay more of its fair share for the cost of new parks, roads, water and
sewer systems rather than you, the taxpayer.
Served three
terms on the council, leading the vision to make downtown a 24/7 place to
be.
Led the way for
the landlord registry and the probationary rental occupancy permit in order
to protect tenants and neighborhoods from irresponsible absentee landlords.
Created the
District D Neighborhood Alliance in order to educate and empower southwest
Raleigh citizens, neighborhood leaders, and Citizen Advisory Council leaders
engaging them in city government.
Came forward as
the first on council to commit to making all 306 acres into a world-class
urban park when the state announced the closing of Dorthea Dix Hospital.
Built consensus
on council to get Hillsborough St construction underway enhancing pedestrian
safety, calming traffic, creating additional on-street parking, and
jump-starting economic development.
Created future
revenue resources through a pilot program for bus shelters and benches at no
cost to taxpayers by developing a partnership with Capitol Broadcasting
Company.
Intervened with
concerned citizens to keep Athens Drive Library open.
NEXT STEPS
How we manage and pay for growth will continue to be Raleigh’s greatest
challenge. Our population is projected to nearly double over the next 25-30
years.
Our highest
priority must ensure all new policies provide for growth, but never at the
expense of our natural environment, existing neighborhoods, and rich
history.
Our water
system’s capacity and financial model must be revamped to encourage and
reward your conservation without the constant fear of your water rates
increasing.
All new housing
and mixed-use development in Raleigh must accommodate opportunities for
people of all income levels.
Raleigh must
adopt policies and create funding sources to construct a comprehensive
transportation network for transit, pedestrians, bicyclists, as well as
motorists.
The city should
take a proactive role in economic development to strengthen fragile
neighborhoods.
